A Safe Place to Land

Children are our future and helping them thrive means supporting their parents and families, strengthening the communities around them, and providing a safe place to land when home isn’t an option.

At Fig Magazine, we understand that two things can be true: we can wish a nonprofit didn’t need to exist while being deeply grateful that it does.

Take Landmarks for Families, which serves children and families in North Charleston and Berkeley County. Its vision is simple: all children should have loving, stable families, and a nurturing community that empowers them to lead successful lives. We love that vision. We believe in it. But we also recognize that not every family has the support it needs to thrive. We’re grateful Landmarks for Families is here to help the children and families who need it most.

Landmarks for Families is deeply rooted in our community. How deeply? It was established in 1790 as the Charleston Orphan House, created “for the purpose of supporting and educating poor orphan children.” Language, societal expectations, and the organization’s official name and mission have evolved over the centuries, but one thing has remained constant: Landmarks’ commitment to serving children.

As our understanding of child welfare has grown, so has the approach to care. Today, the goal is to help children remain safely in their own homes whenever possible, provide temporary foster care when needed, and offer residential care when circumstances require it. Landmarks for Families has adapted alongside these changing needs, developing a range of services designed to strengthen families and help prevent the need for children to be removed from their homes.

The Landmarks for Families Family Education and Support programs help families build meaningful, supportive relationships—the foundation of stability. Offerings include Parent Education and Support, Summer Programs, After-School Programs, Teen Skill-Building, and Grief Support. Programs are available during the school day, after school, and even in the evenings, helping families access services when they need it.

For children who need a safe place to stay, Landmarks for Families also provides residential care. Children who arrive may have experienced trauma, abuse, or neglect. They need safety, stability, and people who believe in their futures. Over its more than 230-year history, Landmarks has provided a home for thousands of children and young people, helping them prepare for life beyond residential care through education, trade apprenticeships, and other support that builds a foundation for adulthood.

Children are our future and helping them thrive means supporting their parents and families, strengthening the communities around them, and providing a safe place to land when home isn’t an option. Landmarks for Families has been doing that work for generations and will continue to be there for children and families today, tomorrow, and into the future. Ours and theirs.

“I have so much heart and passion backing Smart Marketing,” says Childs. “I love the company as much today as I did in 2010, when I first started Smart from my dining room table. That love and passion transfers to my employees, and their love for what they do transfers to our clients’ success. Ultimately, we want to help and grow their businesses, doing whatever it takes.”
