Lowcountry Local First powers a people-first economy

This innovative nonprofit is dedicated to advancing local business ownership.

In Charleston’s vibrant Lowcountry, where culture and commerce intersect, one nonprofit has been quietly transforming the way the region thinks about prosperity. Lowcountry Local First (LLF) is more than an organization—it’s a movement. Its mission: To advance economic prosperity and local ownership through innovative and inclusive initiatives that build the community’s wealth and well-being.

“Since our launch in 2007, Lowcountry Local First has stood on the belief that strong local economies are built from the ground up — ensuring independent, locally owned businesses remain the backbone of the Lowcountry’s economic future,” says Executive Director, Jacquie Berger.

From advocacy and public awareness campaigns to networking events and entrepreneurial training, every initiative is designed to keep dollars—and decision-making—close to home.

Membership in LLF means joining a network of more than 500 local-independent businesses that share a commitment to community, sustainability, and mutual support. Members enjoy access to professional workshops, social networking events, and entrepreneurial resources, all tied together by the “Certified Local” brand identifiers that help consumers easily spot and support local businesses.

“Being a part of Lowcountry Local First provides our family business with the valuable opportunity to connect and collaborate with other businesses that share our values. Networking with like-minded companies not only strengthens our own business, but also fosters a sense of unity within the community. Empowering the Charleston community is a top priority for us, and we are proud to be involved with an organization that shares this commitment,” says Travis Baucom, Vice President of My Three Sons Heating & Air.

As the organization likes to say, choosing local is choosing community. Every time we invest in our neighbors and choose to shop, dine and support local, we help preserve what makes this region unique — ensuring the Lowcountry doesn’t become “Anywhere, USA,” but remains a place rooted in character, creativity, and connection.
