Keeping North Charleston Beautiful

North Charleston has, at times, had a reputation for being…how to say this delicately…one of the less enchanting corners of the Charleston region. It’s not exactly known for dreamy live oak avenues or historic mansions. But there’s a nonprofit out there working to make sure North Charleston becomes known for something lovely: its parks. As it should! From Riverfront Park (truly dreamy) to Palmetto Gardens to beautiful Park Circle itself, there’s so much to love in this little city, and Keep North Charleston Beautiful (KNCB) exists to make sure it stays that way.

KNCB is a nonprofit organization affiliated with Keep America Beautiful, PalmettoPride, Keep South Carolina Beautiful, and the City of North Charleston. Since 2000, its mission has been clear: to enhance the beauty of the City of North Charleston through hands-on beautification efforts, education, and community cleanups. Its vision is a community where people want to live,
work, and play.

Working toward that vision requires tenacity and creativity, to say the least, and KNCB has both in bulk. Through a variety of programs, they connect residents and businesses in the area to work, serve, and grow together. Their programs include:

Adopt A Park, which allows groups of five or more people to adopt a piece of a North Charleston park. Adopters take an active role in enhancing and protecting neighborhood parks, improving daily life for themselves and their neighbors.

Free Litter Cleanup Kits are available to community volunteers who want to organize their own neighborhood cleanup, freshening up streets and parks throughout the city.

Then there’s Litter League, which we at Fig Magazine find utterly adorable because, while it’s intended for adults (or at least adult supervision), we can’t help but picture a youth baseball team in full uniform racing around the ballfield to pick up trash.

That’s not what it is, but also, it’s a competition, complete with a champion. Need we say more?

We could go on and on, because KNCB’s programming goes on and on. There’s a gardening class series, group volunteer projects, weekly cleanups, and so many other ways to get involved in your community.

And perhaps that’s the best thing about KNCB: keeping a city beautiful isn’t just about flowers, parks, and litter-free streets. It’s about creating places people are proud to call home and giving neighbors the opportunity to build those places together. North Charleston has plenty to love, and KNCB is helping make sure there’s plenty more to come.
