Where Dark Academia Comes to Life
Dark Academia is having a moment. From bestselling book lists filled with moody romantasy—magical scholars wandering gothic campuses—to interior design magazine layouts drenched in deep blues, greens, and gold, Dark Academia is as much a genre as it is a feeling. And now, in Mount Pleasant, just minutes from the Ravenel Bridge, you’ll find the independent, woman-owned bookstore of your Katabasis-inspired dreams: welcome to The Archive.
“The Archive was inspired by a love of stories and the kind of spaces that make people feel like they’ve stepped into one,” says owner Amanda Badeau. She envisioned something immersive and a little magical—somewhere readers could slow down, discover the unexpected, and feel part of a community. “Independent bookstores have always been places of connection,” she adds, “and The Archive was built to celebrate that: the joy of reading, the beauty of books, and the conversations they spark.”
Step inside and it feels like wandering the stacks of an old library. Moody shelves hold a carefully curated collection designed to inspire, while the ambiance invites you to linger. “The store is built around atmosphere and community,” says Badeau. “We host late-night events, book clubs, themed gatherings where readers meet other readers.” Some of the most memorable moments, she notes, happen organically: strangers bonding over a favorite novel, a reader discovering a genre they never expected to love, or a room full of people deep in discussion over the same story.
Book clubs, in particular, have become a cornerstone of The Archive’s community. It began with one: the Coven Club, a “witchy book and wine club where we pair a magical read with a thoughtfully selected bottle of wine,” Badeau says. Unsurprisingly, it sold out quickly and built a waiting list. Since then, the offerings have grown to seven clubs—Coven, Romantasy, a Banned Book Club, and more. Some include wine; others are simple, welcoming spaces to sip coffee and connect. “What makes it especially meaningful,” Badeau says, “is that many members sign up on their own specifically to meet new friends, and it’s been incredible to watch those connections form through books.”
Named Best Bookstore of South Carolina in its inaugural year, The Archive has clearly struck a chord. “At The Archive,” says Badeau, “every corner of our store tells a story. We’re more than a bookstore. We’re a place for discovery, connection, and community, where readers can find a book, a friend, or a moment of magic.”
