A Charleston staple since its founding as Boomer’s Books in 1995, Blue Bicycle Books—renamed in 2007 upon its purchase by longtime employee and writer Jonathan Sanchez—has been a reliable source of literature in the Lowcountry for more than 30 years.
Not just any used bookstore, Blue Bicycle Books offers a curated collection, with every item on their shelves thoughtfully chosen by expert staff. Despite all this extra effort to make your experience an easy one, Blue Bicycle’s prices remain low. They are motivated by the belief that the world of the written word should be accessible to everyone.
This conviction can also be seen in their continued collaboration with YALLFest. Co-founded by Blue Bicycle’s owner Jonathan Sanchez with authors Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia in 2011, YALLFest has grown from Charleston’s Young Adult Book Festival to receiving recognition nationwide.
YALLFest’s events are predominantly unticketed and free, focusing on maximizing accessibility to spread the joy of books far and wide.
In addition to YALLfest, throughout the year Blue Bicycle is home to and hosts a variety of events. From signings and speeches by famous figures–Stephen Colbert, David Sedaris, Jonathan Green–all the way to summer-camps for kids, you can find anything and everything between Blue Bicycle Book’s word covered walls.
If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Charleston, pop into Blue Bicycle for AC, a public bathroom, and stellar book recommendations from any one of their friendly employees. Worried because you have children? No problem! Blue Bicycle Books has a wonderful room for kids, decorated with brilliant books galore, bright pops of color, toys, teepees, and more. They have crafted a world which will let your child’s imagination run wild. Best of all, while your children play, you can shop stress-free.
To see what they have in stock, you can visit bluebicyclebooks.com or meander downtown to 420 King Street and see what the world of literature has in store.
