Broad Street Café: A Buzzing Addition to Charleston’s Coffee Scene

Brewing community (and really good coffee)

Consider this a friendly warning: if it’s late at night and you’re staring down a deadline, do not—and we mean do not—open the website for the brand-new Broad Street Café. You’ll suddenly crave bagels, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches. You’ll swear you can smell the coffee. And you’ll find yourself counting the minutes until you can head downtown and experience it all in person.

Ask us how we know.

Of course, that irresistible pull is entirely intentional. Broad Street Café was founded by three partners who share a deep love of food, fun, community, and Charleston itself. Their goal was to create a warm, welcoming space where locals and visitors alike could gather, linger, and connect. They’ve done exactly that.

“What’s on the menu is only a part of what we have to offer.”

“What’s on the menu is only a part of what we have to offer,” says co-owner Tom Caufmann. “What you don’t see on the website is just how comfortable and friendly the café is.”

That said, the menu certainly pulls its weight. The café proudly sources from local favorites, including King Bean Coffee Roasters for coffee and tea, Jeff’s Bagel Run for bagels, Storey Farms for eggs, B’s Biscuits for pastries and biscuits, and Sourdough Sweets Treats & Loaves for decadent sourdough brownies. The goal is “to serve our community an extensive selection of made-to-order breakfast and lunch sandwiches, refreshing beverages, and delicious homemade pastries—ensuring there’s something to delight every taste and preference,” Caufmann adds.

In just a few short months, Broad Street Café has even gained a mascot. On a mild day with café doors wide open, a curious squirrel wandered inside and disappeared beneath a large beverage cooler, much to the staff’s concern. Two days later, during the lunch rush, a customer spotted the squirrel scaling a brick wall near the entrance before making a dramatic leap back outdoors, safe and sound. Today, a small stuffed squirrel tucked onto a shelf inside the café serves as a cheerful reminder of that unexpected (and happy) ending.

At its core, Broad Street Café is exactly what its founders envisioned: a place where good food opens the door to connection, comfort, and community, one cup of coffee at a time.
