Ghosties, Goblins, and Good Times

We think Halloween is best served spooky, so we’ve gathered together some of our favorite places to get your creepiest, your scariest and, for the littles, your most wholesome family fun.

Halloween in the Holy City is, perhaps, the true most wonderful time of the year… at least for the spookiest, witchiest among us. Cooler temperatures lead to bonfires and oyster roasts, while earlier sunsets create opportunities for more adventures after dark. For some of us, this is our time to shine, when the ghosts come out to play and we all remember exactly why we painted our porch ceilings that particular color (haint blue).

We think Halloween is best served spooky, so we’ve gathered together some of our favorite places to get your creepiest, your scariest and, for the littles, your most wholesome family fun. Go forth and enjoy, and then report back to tell us your favorite part.

A Haunted House of Horrors at Holy City Brewing
Every Wednesday through Sunday from now until Halloween, head to Holy City Brewing in North Charleston for one of the freakiest, most immersive (pretend) haunts around. The concept? A local museum curator has announced the acquisition of a “remarkable and ancient artifact” called the “Reliquary Mortis” that is unleashing hell in the museum. The vibe? Super-dark creature feature, with plenty of reasons to pause before going around every corner because you never know what’s going to jump out at you next.

A Real-Life Haunting at the Dock Street Theatre
Look. We can neither confirm nor deny the existence of ghosts, but we do know this: The Dock Street Theatre on Church Street happens to be known as one of the most haunted buildings in downtown Charleston. We can also confirm that being left alone in a room at the Dock Street after dark is deeply unsettling. From the spirit of John Wilkes Booth’s father to a church worker named Nettie Dickerson who longed for glamour, local legends abound about the nation’s first purpose-built theater, and we are here for it.

Ghosties and Ghoulies on Tour with Bulldog Tours
The fact is that if you want an in-depth historical tour of almost any city in the nation, a ghost tour is a good place to start. Combining nuggets of history and local folklore, tour guides can take you into places and spaces you may never have considered historic or haunted. It’s a win- win! And there’s no better tour company than Bulldog Tours. From the Charleston Haunted Jail Tour to the USS Yorktown Ghost Tour to walks through cemeteries and more, we can all but guarantee a spooky-fun time for you and your favorite ghost hunters.

Bouncin’ Around the Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch
We did promise you wholesome fun for the kiddos, didn’t we? It doesn’t get more wholesome than the Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch, which runs Fridays through Sundays through the rest of October and boasts a petting zoo, ginormous bounce houses and, of course, a sprawling field of pumpkins ready for the picking. Bring your camera, because you can expect to watch your little ones fill with joy every step of the way.

We can’t help it. We love fall. We love ghosties and goblins. And we hope you get out there and enjoy everything the Holy City has to offer this spooky season.
